Standing on the River Medway Kent borders the counties of East Sussex, Surrey and Greater London, and a defined boundary with Essex in the middle of the Thames estuary. Kent also has a nominal border with France halfway along the Channel Tunnel it is a 50 km-long (31 miles) rail tunnel beneath the English Channel at the Straits of Dover, connecting Folkestone, Kent in England to Coquelles near Calais in northern France.
The two cities in Kent are Canterbury, it is a cathedral city, and is the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, and Rochester, is the seat of the Bishop of Rochester. The town is home to a number of important historic buildings, the most prominent of which are Rochester Castle and Rochester Cathedral Many of the buildings in the town centre date from the 18th century or as early as the 14th century. Some of the best preserved medieval towns in the UK can be found throughout Kent. The county offers some wonderful coastal resorts for holidays.
