Book holiday Gites and apartments in Iles d'Hyeres France direct The Iles d'Hyeres are a chain of three small and beautiful islands off the south coast of France, near Hyeres. Sometimes they have been called the Iles d'Or (Golden Isles), perhaps because a substance in their rocks shines like gold in certain lights.
The islands were colonized by ancient Greeks. Then they were inhabited by monks, and later became an asylum for criminals. In the i6th and 17th cents, they were a haunt of pirates. The British fleet assaulted and captured the islands in 1793, and in 1944 the Americans seized them from the Germans. Regular passenger-boats cross from La Tour Fondue, Le Lavandou, and Cavalaire on the French mainland. The journey from La Tour Fondue to Porquerolles takes only 20 min.; the others take an hour or more.
