Rhodes (Rodhos) is the largest of the Dodecanese group.  Access by air is from Athens 1.5hrs, or by sea in 12 to 16 hours.

Rhodes was important  and  prosperous during the Hellenic and Roman periods. In the Middle Ages it was an embarkation-point for Crusaders on their way to the Holy Land. Occupied by Saracens, the Knights of St John of Jerusalem, the Turks, and the Italians, It was finally ceded to Greece with the other Dodecanese  Islands.

The main business of Rhodes, like that of Cos (Kos), the second largest oft he group, is tourism commerce and agriculture; the other eleven islands exist mainly by fishing.

In  pre Christian times Rhodes established the first code of maritime law - still the basis for international maritime law.

Green hills and fruit orchards vie with mountains and long sandy beaches with a wonderful mild climate.

The city of Rhodes, stretching behind the fine harbour once spanned by the Colossus, is a charming blend of medieval and modern.

The old Knights' Crusader city was admirably restored by the Italians; homes and offices fill the massive-walled hospitals and palaces, bringing them to life. The modern city, outside the great walls, is bright with hibiscus and bougainvillea. It has a lavish casino, as well as good beaches, and entertainment.

One of the most fascinating ancient sites is Lindos, 35 miles from the town of Rhodes in a magnificent setting on high rocks above the sea, the ancient acropolis towering above the village.
