Zell am See is an unusual resort - not a rustic village like most of its small Austrian competitors, but a lakeside town on an important through-route, with a charming old centre that seems more geared to summer visitors than to winter ones. It's a pleasant place and the skiing has more variety and challenging terrain than is normal in a small area. One attraction is the proximity to the Kaprun glacier and its guaranteed good snow. It is an attractive base for skiers who enjoy travelling around.
Having a car makes it easy to visit numerous ski resorts nearby - including Saalbach-Hinterglemm, Badgastein-Bad Hofgastein, Wagrain, Schladming and Obertauern.
